The New York Daily News recently and the Huffington Post reported that former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer will be paying his ex-wife, Silda Wall Spitzer, $7.5 million (after taxes) as part of their divorce settlement. There are also many other provisions included in the settlement, which include the following:
- Their family's Fifth Avenue home
- Payment of her living expenses
- $240,000 per year in spousal maintenance
- Up to $100,000 per year that will go toward her charities of choice
- A new car every five years
- Money to cover expenses for entertainment and activities
This divorce settlement comes six years after Spitzer admitted that he patronized a prostitution ring and then stepped down from his post as governor in 2008, according to the Huffington Post. The former governor and his wife started the divorce process in January 2014. The Spitzers, who were married for 26 years, have three adult daughters.
When a married couple decides to bring their marriage to an end, they have to decide how their property will be divided and how much spousal support will be paid, if any is paid at all. They also have to establish agreements on other issues such as child support and child custody, when the spouses have minor children together. In some cases, the spouses are able to come to their own agreements, while in others, they need to have the court decide.
