How to Cope Through Divorce

|

If you had a tough marriage, or if it has ended that way, you may be asking yourself, “How am I going to cope through the divorce?” Even if you have decided that you just can’t take it anymore, that doesn’t mean that the divorce has to be this extremely painful process.

Regardless of how you and your spouse feel about each other, we’re almost certain that neither of you want the divorce process to be more difficult than it has to be. So, the goal from this point forward is to get you both to agree to put your heads together until you both reach a satisfactory resolution to your divorce.

When divorcing spouses agree to collaborate, they enjoy multiple benefits, such as:

  • The divorce is a lot more affordable
  • The divorce is a lot less stressful
  • The spouses control the outcome of their divorce
  • There is no need for a judge’s intervention
  • The divorce is finalized much quicker
  • The marital estate is preserved

As a divorce law firm that specializes in mutual consent, uncontested divorces, we have the opportunity day in and day out to observe how spouses divorce without war, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Even though we handle no-fault, uncontested divorces, it doesn’t mean that our clients agree on everything 100% of the time with their spouses, but it does mean that our clients and their spouses have agreed to work together until a fair settlement is reached. Ideally, the faster the better.

We’ve noticed that this positive attitude helps immensely when it comes to coping through the stress of a divorce. Why? Because the spouses are determined not to take adversarial roles.

Instead, they are actively striving to reach a harmonious agreement where both parties walk away from the divorce process satisfied. Isn’t this every spouse’s divorce dream come true? Want to cope well through your divorce? Here are some great tips to make the process easier:

  • Aim for a no-fault, mutual consent divorce.
  • If you have children, don’t badmouth your soon-to-be ex to them.
  • Refrain from discussing anything about your divorce on social media.
  • Do not hide assets from your spouse.
  • Talk to your attorney about protecting your credit during divorce.
  • View your divorce as a business transaction, and make educated decisions before saying or doing anything.
  • Take the highroad instead of blasting the dirty details of your divorce to everyone from your neighbor, to your co-workers, to your children's teachers.
  • Instead of being angry with your spouse, practice empathy and forgiveness. Understand your spouse’s personal limitations and you’ll find it easier to cope with the breakup.
  • If you have children, put their needs first.
  • Put energy into a post-divorce budget. This way, you know if you need to cut expenses and increase your income as a single person.
  • Remember, the divorce is temporary! In a year or two from now, this will simply be something you did.
  • Don’t view your marriage as a failure; view it as a valuable life lesson!
