For 27 years, Bill and Melinda Gates’ marriage appeared to be headed toward till death do us part. However, all that glitters isn’t gold, and in the blink of an eye, the marriage they’d spent over a quarter of a century building, ended in divorce with little to no explanation. Recently, Melinda Gates opened up about the reasons she and Bill got divorced.
Why Did Bill and Melinda Gates Get Divorced?
Melinda Gales, billionaire philanthropist, did an interview with Gayle King of CBS Mornings that aired in early March. According to WCAU NBC 10 in Philadelphia, during the interview, Melinda opened up about what led to her and Bill getting divorced 27 years after tying the knot. While King brought up reports that in 2000, Bill Gates pursued a romantic relationship with one of his company’s employees. Melinda said that she forgave Bill for that indiscretion, and they worked through some of the issues that led to it. However, over the years, those same issues slowly wore away at their marriage, leading to Melinda realizing their relationship was unhealthy and not being able to trust Bill. That is what ultimately led to their divorce.
What Breaks Trust in a Marriage?
One of the most important building blocks of a healthy relationship is trust. Several actions can lead to married couples losing trust in one another, but most commonly spouses lose trust in each other because of one of the following reasons:
- Cheating – Infidelity can destroy trust between a married couple quickly and permanently. It’s difficult to get past the fact that the person you chose as your life partner could break their vows and hide it from you.
- Broken Promises – Breaking promises, especially repeatedly, can lead to a loss of faith and trust. Even if a spouse does not break their promises on purpose, it’s hard to rely on someone who can’t keep their word.
- Lies – Once someone finds out that their spouse has been telling them lies and keeping things hidden from them, it’s hard for them to ever trust their spouse again. If you’re married to a liar, you often end up questioning everything, including what your spouse says, where your spouse says they’re going, where your spouse says they’ve been, and how your spouse feels about you. That’s no way to live.
If you and your partner no longer trust each other and you are thinking about divorce, you need to speak with an experienced family law attorney before deciding what to do next. A family law and divorce lawyer can sit down with you, listen to your story, explain your options, and help you decide if divorce is right for you or if you should give your marriage another shot.

When spouses stop trusting each other, their marriage is all but over. This is not to say that things such as marriage counseling and/or spending time apart can’t help spouses find their way back to a place where they can trust one another. That is possible, but it’s also unlikely. Once you cross some lines, you can never go back.
