Is Billy Porter Still with His Husband?

Billy Porter and his husband Adam Porter-Smith are divorcing after six years of marriage. In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, Simon Hall (Porter’s representative) confirmed the couple’s split in early July. Below, we will discuss the couple’s relationship and what we know about the split in further detail.

Who Is Billy Porter & Why Is He Famous?

Billy Porter is an Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer, and playwright. Porter first gained fame performing on Broadway before starting a solo career as a singer and actor.

He has appeared in numerous productions, including Kinky Boots, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Porter has also appeared in film and television, most notably in the FX series Pose.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Porter is known for his activism and advocacy work. He uses his platform to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ rights and HIV/AIDS, among other issues.

What Does Billy Porter’s Husband Do for a Living?

Adam Porter-Smith is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts; he graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following graduation, Porter-Smith primarily worked in sales for various companies (including but not limited to Jil Sander Eyewear, Chanel, etc.).

In 2016, Porter-Smith started a business and was co-owner of Native Ken, an eyewear company, which closed two years later. Today, he is the creative director of The Smith Society, which is a swimwear company that primarily offers vintage-style men’s swimwear.

How Did Billy Porter Meet His Husband? | Relationship Timeline

The couple met in February 2009 at a mutual friend’s dinner party. They immediately took a liking to one another, and later, the couple found out being seated together at the party was not an accident. Following this dinner, the two dated for seven months.

In 2010, Porter-Smith broke up with Porter, but the two remained friend. Then, five years later, the pair got back together.

Billy Porter proposed to Adam Smith in 2016 while they were on a double date in London, and just 16 days later, the two tied the knot. They shared that they wanted to get married before former president Donald Trump took office, so the couple agreed to a very quick engagement.

For the last few years, the couple has been seen together at red carpet events and premieres. Also, the couple has spoken out about how Porter-Smith helped Porter heal from struggles with intimacy and other past traumas.

As we mentioned, the couple is now filing for divorce. Reportedly, the split is mutual and “was made after much consideration.” The couple is asking for privacy while they navigate this transition.

Amicable Divorce Meaning

An amicable divorce is a dissolution of marriage reached jointly without litigation. Unlike a traditional divorce, where both parties hire lawyers and go through court proceedings, an amicable divorce is typically less stressful, less time-consuming, and less expensive.

By choosing to work together, couples can avoid the emotional and financial costs of a long, drawn-out battle over assets and custody. Some benefits of an amicable divorce include reduced stress and anxiety, lower legal fees, and the ability to maintain positive relationships with spouses and children.

If you are considering an amicable divorce, here are a few tips to help you achieve it:

  • Prioritize your children's well-being above all else. This means setting aside any disagreements or negative emotions you may have towards your spouse and focusing on what is best for your kids.

  • Be transparent about your financial information. This includes disclosing all assets, debts, and income sources to your spouse. By being honest and forthcoming about your finances, you can avoid any surprises or arguments down the road.

  • Keep lines of communication open and try to remain respectful towards one another. Remember that the goal is to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, not to "win" the divorce. If helpful, consider discussing your boundaries with one another to better streamline your communication.

  • Have an attorney review your uncontested divorce agreement. Having an amicable divorce means that you can file for an uncontested divorce (which involves filing for divorce and agreeing to all the terms of that divorce with the other party). While filing uncontested makes the process easier and quicker, you should still work with an attorney when filing. Many people believe that hiring a divorce attorney is only necessary for a contested divorce where there are disputes over child custody, property division, or spousal support. However, even in an uncontested divorce where both parties agree on all key issues, it can still be beneficial to hire a divorce attorney. One of the main advantages of having an attorney on your side is that they can help with paperwork and ensure that all necessary legal documents are filed properly and in a timely manner. This can prevent delays or even an invalidation of the divorce agreement. Additionally, an attorney can provide legal advice and guidance throughout the process, protecting your interests and making sure that you fully understand the implications of any decisions you make.
